Inspired Artist
I’m For my inspired artist I chose Simon Prades, he is an artist who works and lives in Saarbrücken, Germany. For his artwork he has a process of using pencils, and ink on drawing paper. Then he adds digital coloring, Pardes has also used muted pastel colors to convey emotions in his illusitrations. His work is human portraits, combined with natural and earthy elements. I found his work interesting, as well as appealing and entising to the eye. The colors he uses grabs you in, they are very bold yet cooling. I personally liked that his work was based on earthy and natural elements, such as encorpperating plant life into his artwork. My favorite things are plants, and that's mostly what my artwork is. I like encorperating plants, and nature into my illistrations. He also uses digital coloring, which I found interesting and enjoyed, because I like digital editing and digital drawings. Hopefully, I could do in my career in the future. Down below are some of my favorite pieces of his artwork.
Intro to Drawing Project 1 |
Composition is the placement of visual elements in a visual work of art, as distinct from the subject of art. Value is the element of design that defines the lights are dark's in a piece of artwork. The most helpful warm-up was the spheres warm up. This is because this warm-up helped me with shading, and helped me notice the difference value can add to your artwork. I used this the most in my pieces of art above. Some pros and cons of each medium, are that in pencil drawings it is easy to correct you work. You can easily fix any mistakes you happened to make. Although sometimes shading can be difficult, trying to get those defined lights and dark's. In Pen drawings it can turn out really cool, the dots add a more technical aspect to the work of art, and makes it more appealing to the eye. However with pen it is hard to correct mistakes you made. Charcoal is my personal favorite, because it is easy to add value, and makes the drawing pop off the page. Unfortunately it can be messy, and since you're working with lots of dark colors the artwork can turn out looking muddy.

Painting Warm-upsSomething I learned from these painting activities, is that painting has a lot more different aspects then I had previously thought. The most helpful painting activity was the gradient warm up, for my painting I had a light sky and a darker bridge and this warm up helped me work on lights and dark and smooth transitions. I learned the most from the textures warm up, because when I painted I the past I never added texture to my artwork. I have since learned how much texture adds to a piece. I learned some ways on how to create brown, which are mixing red and green paint, blue and orange paint, and yellow and purple paint. I also learned to add tone to a color is to add grey.

The Idea of place |
The place represented in my piece of art is the Verrazano bridge. This place is important to me because it symbolizes New York to me which is where I grew up. I took the photo I was basing my artwork on from my recent trip back to New York. The most challenging part was making sure all the lines matched up, and that the colors blended smoothly. I feel like my sky was the most successful aspect in my painting, I really liked how the colors blended together. My process was to start off with the background and worked towards the foreground. I used a ruler to paint the lines in the painting.

Watercolor warm ups
The activity that I found most helpful was the Brush Control warm up, because it helped me practice a steady hand. I could also practice my lines, since my final piece consisted of many lines this helped prepare me. The most interesting activity was the hall activity. Me and my friends got to work together as a team and brainstorm ideas for pictures of perspective. Having access to most of the school made the activity even more fun, it gave us more opportunities for different and creative pictures. What I liked about water color was that I could make a brighter piece, I had fun using the colors and making it a very colorful piece. In the end this is one of my favorite pieces, since it consisted of brighter colors, and more detail. What I found difficult was that, I had to be more careful with mistakes. Since you can't just paint over a mistake like acrylic paints,I had to be more focused and careful.
Watercolor Perspective
For my perspective piece I chose 1 point perspective. I took the photo on vacation in Florida. I really liked the bright blue and green in the photo, so I decided to use it for my watercolor piece. I liked how I used different techniques such as, using salt for the lanterns in the water to add texture. I used plastic wrap when painting to water to create the look of waves. I then used Prisma Colored Pencils to add a verity of color and brighten the overall piece. I really had fun using all these different techniques, I think it made my piece unique. I had trouble making it stand out in color, since I was painting a blue sky and water. I had trouble making the sky stand out from the water. I also had trouble with making my sky cloudy like in the original photo since there is no white watercolor paint. The two warm ups I picked helped me by helping me with perspective and painting itself. Forced perspective photography helped me when painting the buildings at the end of the water. The brush control helped me practices lines and circles which I used a lot in my final piece.
Lino Cut Printmaking
For my Lino cut artwork, I decided to use the concept of the sun and the moon. I added the lines in the background to accentuate the foreground of the sun and moon. If I were to do this again, I would try harder to make the lines more intricate, and consistent. I also would try and make the facial expressions on the sun and the moon more detailed.

IN PROGRESS BLOG POST
For my clay box, I plan on making something to store jewelry. I plan on finishing it by making it simple yet interesting. I also want there to still be lots of detail and for it to stand out. Somethings that were difficult was forming the edges, and making it smooth inside the container. I also found that making the height of each slab clay square even was difficult as well. I found successful so far was the engravings on the side of the boxes, they have a consistant pattern to them.My processes up to this point has been using the slab technique to create my boxes. I made sure to slip the sides of which would be connecting to form the box, preventing the sides from coming undone in the firing process. Then lastly I used a needle tool to engrave the pattern into the sides of the box.
FINISHED BLOG POST
Once the box has finished firing, I wanted to glaze my piece. Instead of using a solid glaze, I decided to use a glass glaze. Which when fired for the last time created a very cool and interesting pattern on my clay box. Which is actually what I find most successful about my piece. The way the colors mixed and speckled in the glaze looks very nice. I also like how the cracks in the glaze on the lid of my box looks. If I did remake this piece I would focus on making the sides as even as possible, since mine came out a little lop sided.

Portrait Warm ups
The most helpful warm-up so far would be the eye warm-up. I've struggled the most with eyes, and this has warm-up has helped a lot. I still did struggle with eye placement a bit, and the facial proportion warm-up helped me with that.. The thing I found most surprising about the facial proportions was that I never knew when drawing the eyes that they start about 1/3 to halfway down your face. I always thought they started higher up on the face.
Portrait Project
For my portrait I chose to draw my best-friend Cindy, we have known each other for 5 years now and have be the closest of friends ever since. For my medium I chose to do a combo of pencil and charcoal. Since I thought those were my more stronger points in the Intro to Drawing Project. For my process I started from the bottom, and worked my way up. For the facial features I drew them upside down, which was a technique I used when drawing the face of the Charcoal Buddha Planter in one of my previous projects. I found most successful was the shading in her body, and how her facial shape is very similar. In the future I would like to make it more realistic looking, and less "cartoony". I would like to just really focus on the details.
Multi Medium Project
The word I got was ILLUSTRATE, so I wanted to illustrate a dream. I wanted it to be eye-catching and colorful. I used 5 different mediums for my Multi-medium Project. The first medium I used was the base of the piece which was tissue paper. The top consists of more bright colors to blend with the sky. The bottom has more darker colors to blend with the mountains. The Sky and mountains are made from acrylic pant, I used the spattering technique on the mountains to give more detail. To blend the tissue paper and acrylic paint I used blue water color, and acrylic mix. The mountains "snow tops" are made of a salt, white glue, and water mixture. This is my favorite part since it created a lot of texture and detail. Lastly I printed out the "Dream works" logo, and made it into a sticker,I placed it to where it looks like he's sitting on a cloud.
Art Show
For the art show Kaylen, Eleanor, and I. Painted a cardboard cutout of the "Girl With The Pearl Earring". Some pros for the painting was that it turned out extremely similar to the original. It was also interactive, and other students could take part and join into the art. The only con was we could be as creative as the wearable art. For the process we started by drawing an outline of the woman onto the cardboard, then cut out the face. Then we painted the picture. We struggled to paint the pearl a bit, but in the end it turned out really cool.
Last Project
Some pros for my final project were that, I really like the way it turned out. I’m really happy that I got to choose what I could do for my final project. I think this shows a bit of my personality. Some cons are I had to redo it since it got destroyed, but in the end it looks better then the first one. My process was just sketching the image onto a canvas. Then painting it with acrylic paint, to get the black outline I outlined with a black sharpie.

Final ExamSection One |
A. Describe the Artwork
List what you see in the artwork. What images do you see? How would you describe it over the phone. Which art elements? Describe the color schemes. B. Analyze The Artwork List art elements and design principles. Color, Value, line, shape/form, texture, space. Balance, Emphasis, Harmony, Variety. Movement/Rhythm, proportion. C. Interpret The Artwork What is the mood? What feeling is communicated? What ideas are represented? What is the story being told? D. Judge The Artwork What do you think of the artwork? Is it successful? Why or why not? Support your opinions with evidence or criteria (art skills, Meaning, Creative, Realistic) |
This is my most successful piece, but looking back from the begnning of the semester vs now, I would've done some things differently. I had trouble with the eye placement, and used the upside down technique and marks with a ruler. If I could change one thing I would add more highlights to the plants. Since I used charcoal as my medium it was already dark, so adding more light in the succulents would've add more depth. I would maybe try this in a different medium such as pencil, and see if I could gain more texture with the different shading pencils. I would've liked it to be more smooth, and would go back and fix.
Section two
#14 What is a technique you used in your artwork that worked well? Explain what technique it was and why it was successful.
The technique that was the most successful was drawing upside down. It helped me look at the shapes more. I used this technique a lot. It helped especially when I was drawing faces. |
#9 Illustration Fridays have been completed almost every week this semester, do you feel this assignment helped you brainstorm for main project or helped you skill levels in any way? Why, or why not? I think Illustration Fridays have helped my skill levels a lot. I got to practice different techniques and styles. It helped me with my sketches and shading. I found that pencil is my favorite medium as of now because of Illustration Fridays.

#7 What is the point of this class? What did you get out of it? I took this class because I always liked to doodle, but I never thought anything of it. I wanted to better my knowledge of art and become more then just "doodles". I found my style, I don't like realism, but more creative things. Making doodles more detailed and using different mediums. I took away from this class that I really like the more "drawing" aspect in art, and help me branch into other classes that will help me better myself as an artist.
